An excimer laser refers to a type of laser that is generated when inert gases are mixed with halogen gases and then excited by an electron beam; during the transition of molecules from an excited state back to the ground state, the laser is emitted. This laser belongs to the category of cold lasers and features strong directivity, excellent monochromaticity, high output power in pulsed mode, a wavelength range between 157 and 353 nanometers, relatively high photon energy, and a lifetime of approximately tens of nanoseconds—placing it within the ultraviolet spectrum. Commonly used wavelengths include 193 nm (ArF), 248 nm (KrF), and 308 nm (XeCl).
As a type of ultraviolet laser, it is widely used in industrial, medical, and scientific research applications, with particularly remarkable efficacy in ophthalmic treatments. Excimer laser refractive surgery is currently the primary method for vision correction, with common procedures including PRK, LASIK, and LASEK.
In ophthalmic applications, excimer lasers are excited by a specific mixture of gases—such as pre‑mixed gas—to generate an invisible ultraviolet beam with a wavelength of 193 nm. This beam features precise focusing and controllability; its photon energy is sufficient to break the molecular bonds within corneal tissue, enabling vaporization and ablation of the tissue. Each pulse can remove tissue to a depth of approximately 0.2 micrometers. Through precise computer control, the laser can reshape corneal curvature, thereby correcting refractive errors. Because excimer lasers are cold light sources that produce no thermal effect and have limited penetration, they act only on the superficial layer of the cornea without damaging intraocular tissues.
